With the repeated flooding problems at the Mies van der Rohe designed Farnsworth House, concerns arose damaged original artefacts as well for additional exhibition space. Many of these include Mies designed wardrobe can no longer remain on display at the Farnsworth House. The director of the Farnsworth House, Whitney French approached the design build studio at the Illinois Institute of Technology headed by Professor Frank Flury to design a space to house both the wardrobe and various exhibitions on the Farnsworth property in Plano, IL.

This otherworldly outdoor dining pavilion (sighted on Remodelista) was designed by South African-trained, New Zealand-based Lance and Nicky Herbst of Herbst Architects. The simple outdoor structure - a clever folly designed to enhance the beach lifestyle for its owners, was conceived to be used for light cooking, dining and relaxing. The pavilion is made of a simple structural frame over-clad with awnings, screens and translucent sheet blending rustic elements (a timber frame clad with rough manuka sticks) with modern materials (translucent sheets of polycarbonate siding).

House of the Week 133: Cove Way

Located on Sentosa Island in Singapore the residence named by its siting along Cove Way, was designed by architects Bedmar & Shi. Two thick, heavy and rough stone walls define and ground the front entrance of the house under the dappled shadows created by the large over-hanging timber trellised canopy.

Recalling somewhat the stone walled buildings in his native Argentina, Ernesto Bedmar is able with this project to redefine and modernize his tropical language and spatial organization while still echoing traditions of craft of the region.

The sequence of circulation of the house, punctuated by full story voids, gradually reveal space after space, with dramatic transitions of light and shadow, and enclosure and release - opening the entire "sourthern" facade framing views of the marina.

The two-story tropical moderne residence attempts to veil itself from the climatically harsh and public exterior. The house utilizes different textures and materials in their natural state - concrete, glass, wood, lava stone and water, to create varying levels of transparencies. Internally, spaces are linked by two circulation spines that cross over large voids within the large container.

The 57,000 ft² campus centre and associated programme for a main quadrangle at Molloy College designed by BRB architects. Accommodation includes a 550-seat theatre, a café, study space, lounge, student club space, a bookstore and an art gallery some located facing the courtyard. The building is organized as a series of three layers separated by open-ended circulation spines, which allow visual connection to the Molloy Campus. The industrial interior contrasting with the austere yet modern exterior.

The house is organized as two parallel blocks with the interstitial space in-between allows daylight to penetrate all the spaces below. The house is designed with heat gain on the western elevation. Gardens and shallow pools of water are spread throughout the house, blurring the interior with the landscape.

The Biosphere Sustainability Centre is a proposed reuse of an 11,508 m² brownfield site near the Thousand Islands in Gananoque, Canada into a new cultural, social, economic, and environmental centre. Designed by Paul Raff Studio the Centre includes exhibition and conference facilities, artisan studios, market retail, and office space. Additionally, the facility will consist of two green roofs with walk-out gardens, a walk-through biowall that cleans and recycles the air, and sculptural sun shades alongside the building.

Qingdao Water City is a proposed 180,000m² development to be located on a 120acre site on Aoshan Bay in Goyang City, Korea. Designed by multi-national architectural firm NBBJ the development when complete will consist of 10 exhibition halls, one multi-purpose hall, retail and a central outdoor expo plaza. The form of the facility is intended to induce associations of flowing water and is complimented with a landscape made of natural foliage minimizing the need for irrigation.

Dubbed A Living Classroom, the facility designed by CEI Architecture is a net-zero energy and water consuming building. Electricity is generated by the largest photovoltaic solar array in Western Canada located on the roof of the building. Structure is provided by a combination of concrete and laminated timber columns, with wals made of composite panels. All these features make the Okanagan College Centre of Excellence one of the greenest educational facilities in the world.

Located on an ironshore bluff on the Caribbean coast of Grand Cayman, the house is formed as a response to the nature of the site. The house, designed by architects YAR+D, is set on the highest point on a narrow plot, is oriented to receive the tradewinds via a clerestory of fixed louvres. The material palette of flat white paint and glistening dark plaster grounds the house to its environs and within the evolving idiom of Caribbean modernism.
